The Wedding Breakfast | Questions to ask your wedding venue

8 QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR VENUE ABOUT THE WEDDING BREAKFAST

  1. Do you have your own in-house catering that we have to use?

Choosing a venue that has it’s own in-house catering or limits your options can often be a positive thing as it takes yet another choice about your day away from you! Then you have more time to focus on other areas of the day, knowing that the food is covered.

2. If we book our own caterer, is there a kitchen available for them?

Some venues, believe it or not, won’t have a kitchen on site at all. If you are hiring a barn or rustic venue then this may be the case so it’s important that anyone you hire can bring their own equipment and/or most of your food pre-prepared.

3. Do you offer a menu tasting? Is it complimentary within our catering cost?

Most venues, if in-house, and/or most caterers will provide a complimentary menu tasting so that you can decide on your wedding breakfast food - but it’s best to make sure! You want to be able to make an informed choice on your menu and without a tasting - how will you know what to go for?

The gorgeous Millbridge Court in Farnham use innovative Kalm Kitchen as their in-house caterers and they offer a “date night” at the venue ahead of your wedding. A great night to experience the amazing food from your caterer, at your venue so you can get a feel of what your guests will experience on the day.

4. Is there a corkage fee for bringing our own alcohol? Do we have to order the alcohol through the venue?

A really important question as it can add a lot to your overall budget. You may think, “Great, I can save money by bringing in our own alcohol - did someone say booze cruise?!”, but actually corkage fees can be extortionate and it’s easier to buy alcohol through the venue.

Some venues won’t give you the option to bring your own alcohol on-site and would prefer you to buy through their bar. And others will only want you to supply your own - so definitely worth the question so you know where you stand!

5. How many menu options can we offer our guests?

Does your venue or your caterers offer a choice for guests? E.g. can they choose between the chicken and the salmon? If you are conscious that you want to offer guests the choice then definitely worth the question as many don’t and the only adaptations they will do are for dietary allergies or preferences, e.g. vegetarian, vegan, coeliac.

6. Is crockery and linen included in the price?

Another important budgetary question. Venues differ massively here. Some venues offer the standard cutlery and linen within the price, but do offer upgrades and others you will have to hire all cutlery and linen.

7. Are there restrictions to table sizes or orientations?

Depending on the layout of the wedding breakfast space, there may be restrictions on how many people can sit per table. Also, some venues will charge extra for different orientations, e.g. long banquet tables vs round tables.

8. Is there a cakeage fee? Do we need to provide our own cake knife?

May seem dubious, but some venues charge a “cakeage” fee - essentially a cost to cut the cake into portions and serve this to your guests. More often than not, you will also need to provide your own cake knife…
